So Here’s the Thing…conversations that make you say…Hmmm

I am not one to disparage anyone…I just don’t believe in it. However, I am observant and won’t get “called out” without addressing the issue.

I am a pescitarian (I eat vegetables and fish, but no meat) and I enjoy my diet. I do however also like leather coats and own several of them. My aversion to animals as meals is dietery…not spiritual.

I recently treated myself to a lunch at a favorite vegan restaurant, and when the waitress came to my table, she visibly scowled at me leather coat. I couldn’t help but notice and sheepishly asked, “Is there a problem?”. She replied, “You are wearing animal hide!”. I pondered for a moment, looked down and said, “Well, I’m not here to order steak…and the cow was already dead when I bought the coat…and by the way…nice shoes.” (which were leather).

My Mom hurt her leg overextending herself and after a week of nursing it, it hadn’t improved so I took her to her Dr. I have to admit that her Dr. is not on my Christmas card list. He walked into the room looking at his clipboard and asked,,”So what’s the problem?”.  I let Mom explain what had happened, pointing out that it had been a week. The Dr. looked at me, without so much as looking at Mom or examining her leg in any way. He knows I don’t…hold him in great favor. He snapped at me, “Why did you wait to see me? You should know better!”. Hmmm.

I paused and collected myself and replied, “Well sir. We are here now, and your question is distractive if not foolish. There is no clear answer, and even if there was, you still have not examined Mom to diagnose, prognose or cure what is ailing her. If you spend the rest of this visit actually being a Doctor, I will do my best to get her here sooner so you don’t miss a boat payment.”

I’m just saying.

I've stopped wearing furs (mostly) because it makes me too uncomfortable. Although a MN winter is much more comfortable in a mink coat! However, like you, I find it ironic that the same people who scowl at such things find other leather and animal goods perfectly acceptable. In my earlier years, I used to buy vintage, thrift store furs and wear with a button pinned on the lapel that read 'This garment made entirely of animals who committed suicide in the wild.'

Priya - Mom is fine and thank you for your good wishes.

Linda - HA! I ONLY buy leather from suicidal animals...it's a tribute to their memory...right? :)

LOL! Love your comebacks in both instances, Ron! I needed a good chuckle this afternoon.
Oh, and so glad your mom is doing well!
Blessings!

Martha - :) Glad to help in the chuckle department. I hope you are well...and I am happy to confront your Doctor otherwise ;)

The comeback to the server in the leather shoes was priceless! Like the saying about when you point a finger at someone you are pointing three fingers back at yourself!

Galen - Always a joy to see you here! Yep...she was wearing animal hide shoes...and I ate a very nice salad :)

Good one Ron and way to go... Being judgemental is running a very risky life - the doc and waitress should have known that! Loved visiitng her after such a long time...

Well, well, well...aren't WE getting a little snarky! LOL

I have to say the response to the doctor was priceless! It's a good thing he's a doctor, he just might end up needing some gauze to plug his nostrils when you pop him in the nose one of these days. =) hehe

Kathy - Thank you for stopping by.

Kriti - Thank you. I am going to work at writing more this year.

Julie - :) No, I wouldn't smack him, but I would like Mom to get a different Dr. Thanks for stopping by :)

Good one. Hope all is well with your Mom.

Ron said...

Janu - Thank you for stopping by :). Mom has (as we discovered from multiple Dr. appt.'s and tests) acute tendinitis. A better diagnosis than earlier imagined. PT and heat pads will do the trick...and keeping the restraints tight as well ;)

Everyone knows everything and when the pervasive disposition is snarky, it sure feels like a battlefield!

I certainly wish I could sound intelligent on comebacks, I don't take that moment to pause and always sound like an uneducated oaf. I admire your ability. I love these, both made me grin.Hope mom is fine and Dr. was able to make his boat payment.

Ron said...

Jessica - You are very welcome :) Thanks for stopping in.

Margaret - Good point. Far more often than not, I will simply walk away or avoid such situations, but these 2 times, I did not. A point well made...and taken :). Thank you for stopping by.

Jan - Ha! The "intelligent" part is subjective. I'm certain the Dr. thought otherwise :). There is a history with him...nuff said. Mom will be fine. She has acute tendinitis, will get PT and snuggle up to a heating pad for a couple of weeks. She is 87 and needs to pace herself differently. Thank you for your well wishes and for stopping in.

As far as the restaurant scene, I can understand where that waitress is coming from because I have been involved in animal rights for years and am a vegetarian because of ethical reasons. However, no matter one's position on things if you are serving at a restaurant you should simply serve and not impose your ethics or politics on your customers. Seems really inappropriate.

Ron said...

Jessica - The restaurant happens to be a favorite of mine, and I really didn't take her disdain seriously. I normally don't respond to such silliness...but the stars were aligned just right :). Thank you for stopping by.

Oh, snap girlfriend! You are good! Great comeback, "Nice shoes." And I hold very few doctors in any esteem, which is why you have to scrape me off the front of a truck to get me in to see one.

Well, all's well that ends well . . . of course forgetting what goes on in between.

Glad to have stopped by Ron. Hope you're doing well and so is your mama.

Joy always,
Susan

Punam - Thank you ;). Mom is doing better, and thank you for your wishes.

Jayne - Hello and thank you for stopping by. I'm not real keen on Dr.s these day either. I eat an apple a day...and wear garlic around my neck ;).

Susan - Thank you for stopping by. It all worked out fine...and I will work on holding my tongue too :).
