Pestilence…Not the topic…I just like that word

When I drive I tend to observe the world around me…sometimes more than I pay attention to where I am going (another topic). I simply observe. Change, people, places of interest, etc. I find myself travelling more lately than the past several years combined. More new clients (that’s a good thing), more meetings, and maintaining a long distance relationship (also a good thing).
I was coming home from a trip driving on a 2 lane country road and observed a buzzard in the middle of the oncoming lane picking at the bones of…another buzzard. I had questions:

  1. Are buzzards cannibals?
  2. Are you smart enough to get out of the road when another car comes by? Your dinner wasn’t.

On that same trip…there I was minding my own business when a stone shot up and put a bullet hole in my windshield. I immediately called my insurance agent (don’t look up phone numbers while you are driving!) to ask if I was covered for stone chips. My agent (whom I don’t really care for) replied, “No, your policy doesn’t cover chip repair…BUT, if you get the whole windshield replaced, we will waive the deductible and cover the repair.” WTF…You won’t pay $50 for a stone chip repair, but you will  pay $350 to replace a windshield? I’m looking for a new insurance company.

I had several meetings to attend today and on my way to the first one, I was driving along a busy 8 lane boulevard and saw a woman sitting in the median. By sitting I mean she was in a Hoveround…a personal scooter. Moreover, she was wearing a ¾ length mink coat at 9:30AM. I had more questions:
  1.   Would PETA members dare throw blood on an ambulatory person wearing a fur?
  2.  Where are you going?
  3. Did Medicare pay for your scooter?
  4.  If yes, who paid for the fur coat?
On the way back to the office I was on that same 8 lane boulevard and pulled up next to a mini-van that was vibrating with the sounds of hip-hop music playing at the threshold of pain. My first reaction was to think, “OH goodness, I HATE this! Please turn that down.” Then I looked across at the driver. It was a WHITE, thirty-something soccer mom that was bopping to the tunes. I have no questions…I’m still trying to wrap my head around associating what I heard with what I saw. Rock on Mama!

On a final note (and totally unrelated) I had an opportunity to observe something online that gave me pause for thought. I have been following Lisa Brandel’s blog for more than 2 years and have always appreciated the depth and eloquence of her writing. The blog, The Widow Lady is indeed written by a widow, but the content is directed to patients, care-givers and survivors equally. Lisa shares her deeply profound thoughts in a way that invites readers to think and respond whether they agree or not.

The point to this story is that in Lisa’s last post, a gentleman from the UK who himself is in the throes of prostate cancer treatments found her blog and was inspired to feature her on his blog http://chrisluck.net/blog/ extoling the inspiration that Lisa had offered him on his journey. As bloggers, we put our ideas, thoughts and opinions in a global repository hoping to catch the interest of anyone…and we do. What an incredible responsibility! Let us take care to share for the health and entertainment of all who might read what we have to say. Lisa is a pioneer in this quest.

I'm just saying

I feel the weight of my responsibility Every time I put my fingers on the keys. I take it seriously, very much so, if I hold the hearts of the hurting in my hands, they should always be tender and true. <3 _/\_ Namaste Ron Reed...you never fail to make us think and laugh, and that is a gift. Wonderful post Ron. First, I believe the buzzard made it out of the way??? Secondly, I would have had my windshield replaced and then found another company to go with. Thirdly...the soccer mom? Well, can't say that I haven't done that with a load of kids in my car :) And lastly, Lisa. Lisa's blog is a must read. She shares her deepest emotions at a very real level. Both of you are great bloggers!

Lisa - When I was a fresh blogger you encouraged me to find my voice and write and I will always appreciate your nudging and support. You are a beautiful person and a phenomenal author who truly has made a difference globally. Keep it up! I love you too...with all my heart.

Alex - You are top shelf with me as well. You are an untiring supporter of the blogosphere and a good mate as well ;)

Jan - Wana be or not...that was my first hip-hop, soccer mom sighting...and it was scary ;)

Mary - I hope the buzzard made it...I really do. Insurance companies make me crazy because we all pay for their waste. Soccer moms...I never did get it...I WAS a soccer mom (sort of) and I still don't get it ;)

To all - Lisa is a gem we should all be grateful for...just saying.

I found you and Lisa at the same time and since then I have been your followers more like stalker! Anyway you two compliment each other beautifully....

BTW how is your nose doing? Now that I have that off my chest I can proceed further...

Overall bureaucracy in any world sucks! Replace the windshield if that is their policy ... I could write my own experience with USCIS paper work... maybe one day!

I totally can relate to this post! I drive around much in the same way and often wonder about things I encounter. As someone said earlier, I also seemed to find you and Lisa at the same time and am glad I did! Must have been kismet.

All the best to you both!

I find myself observing all the time especially while traveling or driving, somehow I don't quite think of them as the same thing.

I don't think the buzzard cared because it was probably hungry; that applies to the question "are they cannibals" and "is it smart enough to get out of the road."

Mink coats and scooters are in fashion right now like Escalades and food stamps.

I could very easily come off as a white 30 something year old, I also listen to hip hop. Then again I listen to many genres and will sing loudly and rock out while driving or traveling, still not the same thing. I try to refrain from vulgar lyrics while my kids are in the vehicle with me but, then again my kids love when I freestyle and use obscenities. They giggle, I giggle, I curse, they censor...it's how we do it.

Great post and I too love the Widow Lady she is like the older, errr younger sister I never... I mean don't have anymore.

Jen - As for the soccer mom and hip hop...I'm sure there are many...I've just never seen one in the wild:)

Who couldn't love Lisa. She is so passionate about helping and supporting so many people, and we all benefit from it.

That bloke at the insurance company is a nob. You should just lob a brick at the windscreen and get it done free.

I laughed at your observations on your journeys - your brain truly does work in a weird way!! And you are so right about Lisa - she has such a talent for dealing with delicate situations in such an insightful way.

Annie - Glad you came over. A nob indeed. I payed for the chip repair and will change insurance companies next round.

Lisa is indeed a talent...and a GREAT person. We are all lucky to have her in our lives.

Be well,
Ron

Ok...on the whole buzzard thing. No they are not smart. They are not fast. They don't have the intellect bestowed on a rock. More than once we have been blazing down the road over a hill and around a corner and there is one sitting there. Luckily we haven't hit one because I'm fairly sure they would have caused a lot of damage to the vehicles. Stupid things.

As for PETA, ummm...yeah. That's all I got to say.

And, as for my sister, she's one of the best human beings that I have the privlege to know and love. She's in inspiration to me every day in more ways than she could ever begin to know.

I kinda love you a little too, but I don't want you to get a big head or anything. =-p

Love your observations, esp the woman in the mink. Very funny!! I needed a chuckle and am sure glad I stopped by. We bloggers do indeed have the responsibility of taking care of each other either through humor, inspiration, art, or caring words.

Jewell - I grew up on farms and saw a lot of buzzards as a kid. Yep, they are dumb. I put them right there with ground hogs ;). Don't worry I won't get a big head...and I am sort of, kinda like you too ;)

Mary - You are right. Blogging is a new form of literature and I do see it as a responsibility. What we say will exist as a historical archive for the world to see. It should be entertaining without presumption...if not accurate ;)
