The real purpose of this post revolves around similar endearing terms regardless of origin. I thought and thought but could not come up with a US English term as cool as Numpty. When I was growing up, we had lots of nick-names for each other…some not suitable for this blog, but not common words per say. A nickname I got as a child and stuck with me well into adulthood was “Spaz” (short for spastic). I got this name because I was forever thinking and/or doing 3-4 things at a time. I was told that most people had to wear protective headgear to avoid their heads exploding trying to hold a conversation with me. That nickname preceded the inclusion of terms like multitasking and ADHD…you pick.
So here is my challenge! I want you, and everyone you know to comment on this post and leave an endearing term you have been called or used whether it is made up or a common term. Seriously! Encourage participation because I am seriously looking at prizes for the top three comments. Go ahead…you know you want to…just keep it clean because impressionable children read this blog (like me for instance).
I’m just saying.

Alot of my friends call me Snark, for obvious reasons (wittiness...ok, sarcasm), but one of my roommates insists on referring to me as Snarkilicious, which so, so, SO awful. I also call my friend Javi a spaz, because he too is constantly trying to do and say twenty things at once. Also, dunno if it counts but since my brother Jared started his freshman year here, my friends have taken to calling Jarebear, which brightens my day, if not his :p
Lips...yeah, they called me "Lips" because I am so pale, and I wear dark lipstick so you could see my lips coming from a mile (so they say).
Wild thing...got this for beating up a football player who was picking on a handicap man.
The rest of what people have called me is not to be repeated in the company of good people ^.^
Dear Spaz Numpty! HAAHAHA Sounds like a beat poet!
Hi Megan - I love them all...but I see a television series in your future..."Snark Week" on the Discovery Channel!
Hi Lisa - "Lips"...I see it...you are in a transition period from the "Goth" period...but also, I see Lips as a term for you because you are full of sass...and I love it!
Me and my sister go back and forth with 'bitch', 'whore', 'slut', 'cunt', 'cuntbagel', until we run out of variations. I also call people 'dude' quite often.
Simon - Because I love you I will submit "bitch" as a possibility...the others...not so much :)
Bless you,
Ron
But, Ron, 'bitch' isn't solely an American phrase. In fact, it's not even a phrase. 'Dude' is more of a phrase, because I've never heard someone from, say, England, say 'Dude' without mocking surfer stereotypes.
But, as always, I trust your judgement.
Ahahahaha....you got tagged by Annie's name calling too! =)
Let's see, if we are going to mention the names that Annie called me I'm not so sure I know all of them. I'm pretty much sure she's mumbled some name calling my direction when I couldn't hear her. She's called me a Git, Nutbag, Muppet, Mentalist, and Mate that I can remember off the top of my head.
My Aunt always called me Jewell Bug.
However, most common (and one I've worked hard to earn)...Bitch. =)
On a side note...I think I have a girl crush on Lisa because of this: "Wild thing...got this for beating up a football player who was picking on a handicap man." <3 <3 <3 =)
Simon - Okay, I concede...you get bitch and dude...:)
jewell - How are you? I love the word Git as well, know it and Anne has called me one as well...however it is not as endearing, and frankly we should pull Anne aside for that one!
Mentalist I know as well. We used it in Canada whenI was a kid...it fits you and I both :)...cause we're good at what we do! :)
Be well,
Ron
I'm (still) in High School, and fear that most of the nicknames I am accustomed to hearing are not very "My-Uncle's-Blog" appropriate. I, however, have had (and still have) many nicknames. Here goes nothin' ..
- Chops; this name was given to me by Jeremy when I was younger, and having trouble shedding baby weight
- Sketty; I have a dear friend named Syd, and I have a tendency to call her Skyd, so she calls me Sketty
- B.O. (as in body odour); my initials are B.A. and the kids I hang around with lack creativity
- Sweaty Betty; this nickname was given to me by Andrew, and really has no relevance other than it is entirely embarassing
- Red; this one refers to the shade I turn when I am nervous, excited, tired, embarassed, etc, etc, etc
- Little Girl, Dolly, Pud; these are the classic father-to-daughter nicknames that I acquired at a young age and never grew out of
And there ya have it, my nicknames. Next time you must call on me, choose wisely!
BA - I love them all, but I love Pud the most...I know your Dad, and it sounds like him :)
Be well,
Uncle Ron
I got called Googly, Googly, Googly because I have got frog eyes.
And I am regularly called Moose / Dog / Bitch / Spaz / Joey (after a disabled kid on Children's TV) / Special (as in Special Needs).
My most unpolitically correct nickname is Mong.
Anne - I'm definitely looking up "Mong" :)
Ron
Hey Ron! I just read your comment that your Mom had put me in 'Time Out'. What does that mean? It sounds like I could be famouser than Britany Spears!
Right that's it - no bra and a shaved head for me!
P.S. The English have a really weird thing going on with name-calling. If you call someone a mong / numpty / joey / doughnut etc.... it indicates that you are fond of that person. It is far more friendly than calling someone by their name.
It means that the formal structures have been broken down an that you are relaxed with someone.. comprehendez Mongaloid? xx
Hey Anne - Time Out is historically a benign threat that sounds far worse than it is :)
I do know that in western Europe, there are terms that we (in the west) take more personally then intended from those of you in the Mother-Land :)
Call me anything you like, I can take it...cause you're cute...Ah-ha...live with that!
Ron
It's not necessarily one word, but I was recently referred to as "a really nerdy boy trapped in a hip chick's body." I don't know whether that was an insult or a compliment.
Newly following you by way of Annie's blog.
My favorite nickname was given to me by my personal trainer at the gym. Nicki Sixx-pack. Having been a teen in the 80's, I love this nickname for me!
Four Jedis - Reading your posts I can see where the nickname came from and I think it is an endearing compliment...like the Cool Mom :).
Nicki - That does sound sortof 80s-ish...it also asounds like your workouts are intense :)
When I was younger, I had various nicknames based on the fact that I had a beard: Fidel, Rasputin, Jesus Christ. I haven't been called anything other than my real name for decades, and I still have a beard.
This post reminded me of one of my own recent posts, Toodle Pip!, which pondered why there are so many slang terms for common things: money, the police, being drunk, etc.
Hi Dennis - I too have had a beard since I was 19 and got a lot of "Jesus" references as a result. Glad you stopped by. I will visit your blog as well.
