Recently overwhelmed with work and family matters I began to retreat into a mild state of self pity and worry. In the middle of this mental field trip I reflected back to advice my Grandfather gave me over many years. Grandfather was a very earthy and wise person who was unflappable and simply “got it”.
Something he told me early on was “There are many things you will do in life that you don’t want to or don’t like…but what you do for a living should never be one of them. Family first…and happiness follows.”
In the midst of my self pity party I stopped, sat down in the dark in the middle of the night and focused on everything in the present. I remembered my Grandfather’s advice and reflected.
I am a very fortunate person…very fortunate. I have been lucky enough to do pretty much whatever I wanted with my life and have managed to be successful and happy with most of it.
I remember a comedy sketch years ago on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour where Ben Franklin visited an employment office looking for work. The “consultant” looked at Ben’s resume noting “Inventor, Author, Diplomat, Publisher, Philosopher”, etc and commented “Hmmmm, can’t keep steady work eh?”
In my lifetime I have held paying occupations that in relative order included farming, law enforcement, education, art, carpentry, furniture building, theatrical production and direction, technology consulting, advertising and marketing consulting…and I have been successful at all of them and with the exception of 2.5 years in 34 never worked for anyone but me. Short attention span, or just following my loves? Mariann (my dear late wife) observing multiple occupation changes and alleged talents asked me once “What Can’t you do?” My reply…”Sit Still…and yodel!”
I don’t offer any of this as boastful information, I know I am fortunate and wish as many opportunities to anyone who seeks them.
No, I offer this information to encourage you…when I have a whiny fit…to remind me how lucky I am.
I’m just saying.

You can't yodel?! It's like I don't even know you anymore...
Hi Megan - I tried yodeling once and it resulted in a small stampede of neighborhood pets and broken glass...I just hum now :)
Yup. I really needed to read this today. Thanks. Also, I LOVE THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS.
it's nice when we can sit back and take a break and count how bless we really are, you could of chosen to sit and complain but you didn't you saw how full your life is and that is great. It's amazing at times that the words from our love ones will come to our mind to remind us of things they spoken to us years ago.
Loved your blog
Hi Jos - I've been thinking about you. I read about the new position...hang in there.
Desiray - Thank you for visiting. Glad you enjoy the blog, I will visit yours as well.
A great exercise! It is nice to remind ourselves of our luck sometimes!
I am now full of envy, Ron! Am still trying to find something I can do that I love and can make a living out of.
Get your head screwed on straight, and get back here regular like..you have co-dependent people hanging on your every word!
We need these 'moments' sometimes to do just what you did, Ron - reflect, recall and re-assess.
Some kind person ;-) told me recently that I was wise when I was going thru something similar.
I'd like to say that you're a wise man, too.
Take care & look after you. :) xx
Hi Lisa - I had to laugh because I regularly tell myself to keep my head screwed on straight. We all hit our stride in time so keep searching...the journey is worth it.
Gill - Thank you very much for your support and advice...it sounds wiser coming from you :)
Ron
I am completely let down, you cant yodel!??!! Just kidding! Well, I cant sit still either!! Isnt it amazing that those little sayings our parents and grandparents always said one day hit us in the forehead. They always seem to make since down the road. To hear you speak, it sounds like you are truly blessed. That is great!
Stopping by to say hello. Have made a lot of recent changes on my blog. Hope you can stop by and let me know what you think.
Stay Fabulous

Couldn't agree more. There is nothing like a regroup every now and then to realise that things are not as bad as we think! P.S. blimey, you have got a diverse work background *wink*
Hi Anne - Thanks! Yah...short attention span :)
Be well,
Ron
Well said, Ron. I keep reminding myself of the same thing. Teacher, farmer, wife, mother, grandmother, writer. The list goes on. So much to be thankful for. And by the way, I love how you brought your personal story to your blog, something I haven't be brave enough to do yet, though I believe readers really respond well to such sharing. I will become a follower as of today. Thank you for an inspiring post.
